Having installed nearly 45,000 solar panels across its Afyon, Buñol and Eskişehir facilities over the past three and a half years, Çimsa is now set to deliver the Republic of Ireland’s largest rooftop solar installation at its Mannok facility. Once completed, the project will increase the company’s total installed solar capacity across all of its operations to more than 30 MW.
Building on the renewable energy investments that have positioned it as a pioneer in Türkiye’s cement and building materials industry, Çimsa continues to expand its expertise internationally. As part of this commitment, the company has commenced construction of a rooftop solar power plant at Mannok, one of the leading building materials manufacturing sites in the UK and Ireland, which joined the Çimsa family in the final quarter of 2024.
Installation to Cover an Area Equivalent to 5.5 Football Pitches
The rooftop solar installation will cover approximately 38,800 square metres—equivalent to around 5.5 football pitches—and will comprise approximately 10,000 solar panels. With an installed capacity of 6 MW, the facility will generate around 4.86 million kWh of renewable electricity each year, preventing approximately 792 tonnes of carbon emissions annually. The project will rank among the Republic of Ireland’s most significant renewable energy investments, not only within the building materials sector but across the country as a whole. Upon completion, it will become the largest rooftop solar installation in the Republic of Ireland.
Total Installed Solar Capacity to Exceed 30 MW
In recent years, Çimsa has made significant investments in solar energy across both its domestic and international operations. Over the past three and a half years, the company has installed nearly 45,000 solar panels at its Afyon, Buñol and Eskişehir facilities. With an existing installed solar capacity of 24.7 MW across these three sites, the completion of the Mannok project will increase Çimsa’s total installed solar capacity to more than 30 MW. Together with its waste heat recovery (WHR) power generation facilities currently operating in Mersin and Eskişehir, the company’s total installed renewable energy generation capacity will exceed 41 MW. Collectively, these investments will enable Çimsa to prevent approximately 50,000 tonnes of carbon emissions every year.
“We Are Transforming Both Our Products and Our Manufacturing Technologies”
Commenting on the investment, Çimsa Chairman Umut Zenar said: “Through all of the renewable energy investments we have made to date, we are not only advancing towards our sustainability goals but also diversifying the energy sources that power our operations. In doing so, we are strengthening Çimsa’s green transformation while enhancing our ability to meet the energy needs of our facilities through our own resources. This allows us to access the energy we require in a more sustainable, more secure and more competitive way. For some time now, our greatest priority at Çimsa has been to transform ourselves from a cement company into a global building materials company with sustainability at its core. Throughout this transformation, we are making both the products we manufacture and the technologies we use in our production processes more closely aligned with our sustainability ambitions. This investment is another clear demonstration of that commitment.”
Highlighting Mannok’s strategic position across the UK and the Republic of Ireland, Umut Zenar added: “Mannok occupies a highly significant position across the UK and the Republic of Ireland. It is what we would describe as a fully integrated building materials campus, with extensive expertise in the production of cement, cement-based products, insulation materials and recycled plastic packaging. Beyond its manufacturing capabilities, Mannok also plays a leading role in its region through its work in sustainability and biodiversity, helping to shape the building materials industry. Delivered through the close coordination and strong collaboration between the Çimsa and Mannok teams, this investment will further reinforce Mannok’s leadership position across its region.”
