Çimsa Invested in SPP at Eskişehir Plant Following Afyon and Bunol Plants!

Çimsa to install SPP at its Eskişehir Plant

Çimsa, one of the global brands of the Sabancı Group, will install a solar power plant (SPP) at its Eskişehir Plant after its Afyon and Bunol Plants.  The plant will have a DC installed power of 14.2 MWp and generate approximately 19 million kWh of electricity per year. Approximately 14 percent of the factory’s annual energy need will be countered by renewable energy sources once the investment is realized.

Çimsa, a subsidiary of Sabancı Holding, which carries out various activities to contribute to sustainable living by improving its environmental performance, is investing in a solar power plant for its Eskişehir Plant after its plants in Afyon and Bunol Spain.

The plant, which will have 14.2 MWp DC installed power, will generate approximately 19 million kWh of electricity per year. The plant will meet approximately 14 percent of the Eskişehir Plant’s annual electricity consumption. The amount of electricity to be generated at the power plant, where 25,740 solar panels will be used on an area of 166,000 m², equals the annual electricity needs of approximately 6,300 households.

Scheduled to start in the second quarter of 2024, the SPP investment is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2025. The Solar Power Plant (SPP) project is expected to contribute to nature by saving approximately 8,400 tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂) annually which equals the CO₂ neutralization capacity of 5.6 million trees.

Çimsa CEO Umut Zenar made the following statement on the subject:

“Efficiency studies in all kinds of resources, especially energy, and digital transformation, the use of alternative fuels and raw materials, and advanced technology investments such as the use of hydrogen as fuel, carbon capture-storage-utilization are seen as the main factors that will support achieving net zero targets in the global cement industry.

We launched the decarbonization project under the leadership of Sabancı Holding in 2022 in line with Sabancı Holding’s commitment to achieve “Net Zero” status by 2050. In this context, we submitted our target commitment to the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), and we will share our SBTi approved targets after the ongoing validation process.

Energy efficiency and diversity also constitute one of the important steps in our emission reduction path. While the rate of electricity generated from renewable energy sources was 58.2% in 2022, our aim is to increase this rate to over 80% by 2030. The SPP project to be established at our Eskişehir Plant is a robust step we have taken to fulfill the energy needs of our operations with renewable energy sources and reduce our carbon footprint as part of our vision to create sustainable value. Once the Eskişehir SPP is commissioned, approximately 40% of the electricity needs of our Eskişehir Plant will be fulfilled from the electricity it generates and electricity generated from waste heat investment.”
